Legacy Recognition Sunday
A Letter from Bishop Scruton and Recognition Sunday materials for 2010.
Epiphany 2010
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
During the season of Epiphany we give thanks for the light of Christ shining forth in the world. Therefore it seems appropriate to give thanks, during Epiphany, for those who have manifested their love of Christ with legacy gifts over the years.
I hope you will observe Legacy Recognition Sunday some time during Epiphany. As part of this recognition you can recognize those parishioners who have made Legacy Gifts to the congregation you serve over the years and continue to do so today. Legacy giving in our Diocese has made a significant difference over time in making resources available that continue to strengthen mission and ministry in congregations throughout the diocese. We hope, through Legacy Recognition Sunday, to raise awareness of legacy stewardship giving opportunities in each congregation in our Diocese.
We are providing the following resources for your use on Legacy Recognition Sunday. Please feel free to adapt them for use in the parish you serve.
A Collect
A Bulletin Insert with the BCP Rubric on page 445
A Sermon to inspire sermon ideas on legacy stewardship.
A list showing current membership in the Bishops’ Legacy Fellowship, those persons who have indicated to us they have made a legacy gift to support their parish or a ministry of the Diocese. (links follow this letter ... scroll down)
These resources are available here at the bottom of this page . If you have questions about any of the resources, please contact John White, our Missioner for Legacy Stewardship at ejwhite@diocesewma.org.
I am delighted to tell you that membership in the Bishops’ Legacy Fellowship continues to grow. At this time we have over 152 individuals and couples from 40 different parishes that have made legacy gifts. It pleases me to tell you that 97% of these gifts have been designated for congregations.
May God bless and guide you as you minister to your parish and lead it through these wonderful and challenging times.
Your brother in the service of Christ,
Gordon P. Scruton,
Bishop
